Hey everyone,
I’m planning a year-long bike tour from Southeast Asia to Europe and came across this Surly Disc Trucker build for $2,100 USD. I’m not familiar with all the components, and I’d like to get some opinions on whether this setup would be reliable for such a long trip and if it’s worth the money or should I look elsewhere?
Specs:
•Frame: Surly Disc Trucker 56cm
•Groupset: Shimano 105 & SLX mix (38t, 24t)
•Wheelset: Hope RS4 + DT Swiss TK540 700c (custom)
•Pedals: Deore XT T8000 (Flats + SPD)
•Saddle: Brooks Flyer
•Rear Rack: LKLM Stainless Steel
A few questions:
1. Would this setup hold up well for a long-haul tour?
2. I’m 173cm (5’8”), would a 56cm frame be too big for me?
3. I’m considering going tubeless—does anyone know if these wheels are tubeless-ready?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The bike is fine for multi-month multi-country touring but 56cm is a tad large for you. Try and ride a 56cm for few hundred miles and you’ll see why.
The wheel rims, spokes and hubs are a good choice but change or at very least inspect the wheel bearings before setting off (Hope cassette bearings are not always available off-the shelf).
Don’t go tubeless for a long range tour multi month tour – you’ll ed up putting tubes back in anyway.
Edit: If you do buy it chop that fork column down. That length tube sticking up will cause infertility at the least and death at worst case.
