Depends where you are. If you’re in a major cycling area then do what I did and start with an old road bike conversion since it’s cheap and you won’t feel bad fucking it up as you get comfortable. If you’re going to have to do everything online then start with a base model complete, again because you won’t feel bad crashing it and you won’t need to baby it you can actually build up skills. I see a lot of crazy ass builds on people walls, not so many actually out riding around the city so take that as you will

  3. Converted a 80’s schwinn sprint in probably 2008? Suicide hub (a welded cog to the hub, I did eventually get an Alex fixed wheel from a buddy) and flip chopped the handle bars into bull horns. I loved that bike but no, I would not recommend it. Ended up getting stolen.

Still waiting to the lotto so I can afford a ‘crazy ass build’ 😅

My first was a $500 cookie cutter, that you got to choose wheel colours, chain colour. Hip, mainstream ‘fixie’ back in 2009. It got stolen.

16 years later, and I’ve only been back into fixed for 6 months again.

I got given a bike and started doing some upgrades to it. It was similar to my original bike.

Then, I scored a Cinelli Bootleg for $50. That’s as fancy as I’ve managed to get. It’s got sugino 75s, nice MKS pedals, and hold fast straps. I’ve got it geared for riding at my local outdoor velodrome.

I’ve just bought a nice lugged frame and have got a bunch of njs stuff to put on it, just to casually ride round town.

First bike was a Raleigh conversion. First FG proper was a Langster Pro. Seatpost clamp was the worst part.
