I’ve been running this new old stock Mountain Tamer Triple 20T on the Specialized 110/74mm bolt circle cranks that came with my 1986 Stumpjumper.
The Mountain Tamer is a special splined cog carrier that replaces the little ring on your cranks and lets you run a smaller freewheel cog in its place. It’s great for climbing up the steep stuff. The smallest little ring that will fit on 110/74 cranks is a 24T, but with a Mountain Tamer you can run down to a 17T for crazy low gearing.
The guy that invented it still has some and he has an old school website where he’s offering them and some other cool items, like cantilever brake boosters and threaded headset lock rings. His name is Tom. I don’t have any affiliation with him, but he seems like a nice older fella. Maybe we can give him an xbiking bump and help him sell his old stock.
If you’re interested in lower gearing check out his site:

Those things are cool as fuck. I had one for a few years, never actually mounted it (turns out I don’t need gears that low).
