  1. I assume you shortened your chain to make it fit. It could be that the pin was not seated correctly ive had this happen before

  2. That’s exactly how a chain breaks. The plate dislodges from the pin, the. The other side takes the full stress and peals off. Every time a link mounts a cog the side plates flex until either by fatigue or cheap materials and construction fail

  3. If that is 50miles on a brand new bike and chain I would try to get a replacement from where-ever you bought it. If you can’t get a replacement just get a quick link to replace the broken link. Hell, get a quick link to replace the link even if they give you a replacement, then you will have a spare chain ready when one wears down!

  4. Most likely shifted under a load, started to ride with different gear in the cog and different one on the shifter or the bike is set up incorrectly and the chain was misaligned and put under a lot of stress.

Do a bit of reverse thinking and try to find a cause. Or maybe you ride very hard geared, something like 3-8 and you are a big man. Try to find some logic.

I have ran a bike shop, sold thousands of bikes and rode many, trust me when I say that those situations happen most often to average joes on unprepped bikes.

My bike is being tortured but I know when my index screw is one click off and I don’t let that stay like that. I can safely gear up on my 1×12 SLX/xt in the forest without any worries because I trust in my setup.

You can try to fight with the store but if you k ew the bike was unprepped you wouldn’t take it like that, so it’s a word vs word. Depends, maybe they will replace it. I wouldn’t, I would file a claim to the producer to see what they say, but again. I trusted in my workshop skills and I never let a bike leave the store unprepped.

I have seen people neglecting their bikes way too often to believe in miracles. So probably get a 30$ chain and move on. Just check everything else, do it by the way of doing the first warranty bike check if you did over 50 miles on it, better do it anyway around that mark.
