I went for ride yesterday trying the big 10-52t cassette since everyone is saying this to be the perfect setup. I went on a climbing section. It was a pretty steep climbing. Ok, it does climb well, but on the flat road I noticed how heavier the bike has become especiallyon the back side. All the roadbike characteristics that this bike has even though it is technically a gravel bike disappeared with the bigger cassette. I've noticed the big difference in the range to. I'm definitely sticking to my 44t cassette.

What do you have in the front?  I guess it really depends on the terrain and youe fitness, I have the lowest ratio 0.87 (40T with 11-46) and I find it just right for the steep, loose climbs, I had 0.95 (11-42T) for a while and while that’s enough on the road, it was a bit too hard at times on gravel.

    But I have been thinking about getting a 42T chainring for some extra speed..

    How much weight are we talking about here. A GX 10-52t is 453g and XPLR 1271 10-44 is 373g. Giving away a bunch of gearing for off-road cycling all for 80g seems like a ridiculous take… Just shave the knobs off your tire at that point.

    But i’m ok for the range because i’ve the two cassette with two set of wheels one with 10-52t for technical gravel and one with 10-44 for road

  4. So what is the actual weight difference between the cassettes?
    The internet says it’s less than 100g different for SRAM 12 speed. If you’re that sensitive to 100g on your bike you’re one highly tuned racing machine!

  5. Like others are saying, the weight can’t be that much of a difference.

    If you had said you didn’t like the larger jumps between gears, that would have rung true (for me anyway).

    I definitely notice that on my 1x gravel bike vs. my 2x gravel tandem.

    On one hand I’m jealous you notice 100g and you and your bike are that highly tuned. On the other, I am glad I probably wouldn’t notice 1kg or more.

    I would miss my low gears though. No idea how steep your hills are but while ours aren’t insanely long (usually no more than a few km) they can be extremely steep.

  7. I know 1X is a growing trend and I’ve ran a 1X setup, but I always come back to my 2X 53/39 with a 11/34 cassette. Road race top end, and all the climbing ability you could ever want.

  8. Big cassettes don’t really add that much weight. I run an XX1 Eagle AXS derailleur with a 10-50 cassette and my Crux is still only about 17 lbs.

    Yeah that doesn’t make any sense. On flat road sections, weight literally has no effect on your speed.

  10. Dylan Johnson’s gravel bike is over 20 lbs and this is the dude that is the mad scientist of marginal gains. He says weight is the least important factor fwiw.

  12. lol…if you are worried about weight that tanker you drink water from might be a place to start, glad to see the iPhone mount is now gone. Next work on those pedals mate.

  13. All this says is that you are a little insane. You are just not feeling that extra 60 grams (or less weight depending on which cassette, some are super light), it’s all in your head.

    I think your front tire is put on the wheel in the wrong direction. Schwalbe g one rs pro have different directions for front or rear use.

  17. For me it’s the gear ratios that I couldn’t deal with. The jumps are way, way too big for me.

    That’s in your head, the weight difference between a 44t cassette and 52t cassette isn’t drastic.

    What you probably noticed was a forced change in cadence because you might have automatically been in a different gear due to the steps being larger.

    I came here to say that I liked the setup and specifically the gear range. And then I read the post and just SMH.
