Hi I’m new to bike repair and currently trying to build a bike with spare and used parts I’ve managed to get. I’m trying to replace the shifter cable as it is not long enough to reach the rear derailer.

I can’t for the life of me figure out how to get the plastic cover off this shimano xt shifter so I can replace the cable with a longer one. I’ve taken out all the little screws and don’t want to ruin the thing by pulling on it hard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You do not need to take of the cover, on the side of the levers there is a plastic cap or large plastic screw that you use to access the cable.

  2. You don’t need to do that. There is a little plastic bolt just behind the shift lever that you need to take out and while you’re in the first shift position, push out the cable.

  3. That’s spring tension and magic holding those two halves together, DO NOT take these apart like this in the future unless you really want a bad day.

Glad you figured it out, they are designed so you shouldn’t have to crack the shifter housing apart.
