I'm not necessarily looking into mountain bikes to get into heavy trail riding or anything, this style of bike is just what I grew up with living outside of town and Id like to have the option to do pretty light trail riding given the opportunity.
I came into this looking to spend about $200, but I've since discovered that it's harder than I thought to find stuff on the used market and the only option new is something from Walmart, and I'd like something a little higher quality than that.
I've come up with a couple options, for reference I'm 6'3", with a lot of that height in the legs. Guy and one of the local shops said I should probably be looking at xl frames and 27-29 inch tires. I've come up with two candidates right now, the more expensive one being brand new from a local shop. I'm wondering if the used one would be just as good if not better? Mostly I'm just looking for a step up from the average Walmart bike and something that'll last a few years.

Hard to find being key words. Probably have a hard time finding parts. I’d go for the new one if I were in your shoes
Nothing will be safe for you to take offroad at that price. Most big box stores tell you their bikes are not for offroad use. Find a good deal on a used bike with old geometry in good condition. If you can dig, you might be able to find something around $700. $500 if someone really needs to dump a bike.
