In experimenting with different stem lengths/angles, I’ve just tightened up a stem on my carbon Time Trial basebar…

The stem was ever so slightly too wide for the clamping area, and as a result a small chunk of the carbon (or paint??) has been gouged out of the carbon.

For those more familiar with carbon, have I made a very expensive mistake and ruined the bars? Or is it salvageable?

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but I think I can see some fibers, which tells me it could be more than just a scratch. If that is the case there is a good chance a carbon repair specialist can fix it, since it seems superficial. Would definitely have it checked, better safe than sorry with carbon bars.

Id say you’re probably ok. It is hopefully just the paint build up in the corner there, ive had that once or twice before that the paint comes off. You’re correct to be careful with carbon though. I’m definitely open to be corrected by anyone with more Carbon knowledge, especially with TT bikes.

  3. Hopefully I am not only who is confused on what I am looking at. But yes it seems dent in carbon
