Shadow Conspiracy BMX shin pads are great. I used to wear massive, bulky, knee pads that covered half my shin but I was still getting shin strikes below the pad. Those BMX shin pads let me use a WAY lighter knee pad while providing 100% shin coverage.

Fox sells a nice thin knee pad that covers down your shins, it saved my destroyed shins.

I got myself protection socks. They have some padding for the shins.

Admittedly I could be a (much) better rider, but after getting a pedal strike bad enough to require a lot of stitches I switched to clipless and it was one of the best things I ever did. I still use flats occasionally to try and prevent developing bad habits, but the extra assurance through rock gardens alone is a huge win.

Wear better MTB shoes and your feet never slip

Yeah so to be a bit pedantic, I thought a pedal strike was when your pedal hit something on the ground. Doesn’t this have a different name?

Re badges of courage!!!
Huge reason why I started to clip in.

That’s why I ride clipped in! Unless you primarily bomb downhills and want to be able to bail mid-air, clips are the better tool for the job.

I have two very deep pedal scars on my left shin, that went to the bone when it happened. I love my knee/shin guards now and will always wear them.
No more shredded shins for me.

I have a little pack of super glue in my backpack for when I see my shinbone again. It’s super fast and you can keep on riding without having to worry about it
