Over the past few months, I have ran into an issue where, during a ride, I would suddenly be unable to shift. The shifter would click but not pull the cable, effectively leaving me without the ability to use my rear derailleur. It looks like the little nub on the end of the cable inside the shifter becomes dislodged from the silver sleeve that pulls the cable. The first picture shows the nub dislodged, just sort of stuck in the shifter. At this point, the silver sleeve that pulls the cable is down inside the shifter. The second picture shows the cable reinstalled properly, for reference. What causes the nub to jump out and become dislodged from the sleeve, and how can this be prevented in the future? Thanks!

  1. Did you use Campagnolo shifting cables? If that’s the case, they are just too small.

I would change out the cable and check that the housing doesn’t have any excessive bends

I had this happen a couple different times and both times changing the cable resolved the issue
