  1. Easiest was to tell is buy or borrow a chain wear checker. Amazon has the good park ones for less than a bank. Nice and easy investment for the peace of mind.

    Chains are inexpensive and 5k miles is a good life depending on how hard you push. So it wouldn’t be wrong to get a new one anyway. If the new one skips then you will need to replace your cassette too. I wouldn’t be surprised as it looks a little worn to me.

  3. Chain wear is pretty dependent on maintenance and use conditions but I’d say your range is well within the expectation of needing a new chain.

    Unfortunately though, if the chain is too worn then the gears are also worn to match the chain and a new chain won’t engage right with worn gears.

    I would get a chain checker or have a bike shop measure it. If you have calipers you can do it yourself also. Just Google how to measure a chain for wear.
