Having trouble getting my Suntour X-1 rear derailleur to shift right. I can get it to index shift down smoothly (high gear to low gear) but when I try to shift back up to my high gear it won’t return properly. I end up just clicking it a bunch of times to get it all the way back to my high gear instead of getting it to step there properly. I have the original stock Suntour x-press shifter. It’s been regreased, when I opened it up it didn’t look too dirty. Took it to the bike shop and the guy said it could need maybe a really deep cleaning but it’s also simply just a 30 year old shifter. He said my derailleur is fine though. I’m gonna try fixing it again but if not I’m thinking about switching to thumbies and retiring the shifter. Suggestions from you guys? I wanna get ones that can index as well but I know suntour is weird. If I have to just do friction then I will but wanted to see what you guys had to say.

  1. No advice on your shifter but I switched from index shifters that worked fine but were ugly to $14 friction shifters and I actually find them nicer to use. Also a bonus how dead simple they are to set up

Suntour’s poor index shifting is a large reason why they went out of business. Shimano gobbled up all their market share with SIS and suntour never recovered.
