I have this older Deore xt 10 speed hub (part FH-m756). Interested in putting a 1×11 Deore group on it for a build – is it possible? I’ve read that some 11 speed mtb cassette can go directly on 10spd, but other places say not possible.
Any advice?

try it? worse is you change to 10 speed
A 34t plus 11 speed will fit without any issues.
yes, it’ll work.
shimano 11 speed mtb cassettes fit 10 speed (35mm) freehub bodies. shimano accomplishes this by having the largest cog hang over towards the spokes a little bit, and they ship them with a spacer to fit 11 speed (36.8mm) freehubs. some 11-34t road cassettes are build similarly.
note that sram 11 speed cassettes will not work with 10 speed hubs. they are built to only fit 11 speed (36.8mm) freehubs.
All Shimano mtb 11sp cassette would work.

Some places are trustworthy, others are not.
All 11 speed Shimano MTB cassettes fit on 8/9/10 speed freehub bodies like the one you have. If you’re using a Deore 11 speed cassette, it will fit.
The problem is that people are lazy with language and often cut corners when it comes to defining compatibility in the name of typing fewer words. Sometimes you just gotta list things exactly and explicitly for them to be unambiguous.
It’ll work just fine. Heck, you could put a 12spd SunRace 11-51t cassette on there if you want 12speed. I found a great deal on the 12 cassettes made for HG hubs and bought 3. Works like a charm with my Shimano 12spd stuff.
11 and 12 speed MTB hyperglide cassettes will fit on 10 speed hyperglide freehub bodies. A 1.8mm spacer would be needed to fit the above cassettes to an 11 speed hyperglide freehub body.
11 sp Road is the newer standard. 10 speed HG accepts all mtn cassettes.
