Hello, so I have a Marin Rift Zone XR and I decided I wanted to upgrade some of the components. I've upgraded the chain and have a new SLX cassette waiting to be installed, but the main thing I wanted to upgrade were the rims.

My question is what does someone need to look out for when buying a new wheelset for a mtb? I'm a beginner in this hobby (bought the bike May 2024) and I wanna be REALLY sure what to look out for before I spend that much money on a set.

The set I've been looking at are the DT Swiss XM1700. Would they fit my bike? Are they overkill?

For now I ride mostly flowy green, blue trails and I tend to avoid jumps. I don't mind techy trails, but I do take it slow on them and even if I could, I probably wouldn't go too hard since my bike isn't exactly an enduro bike.

Thank you!

do you have any issues with your current wheelset

If your a beginner yourprobably wont notice any difference so I would just save the money for something else

Fwiw, I ride a Marin Alpine Trail 7 with the stock rims and I bashed them all around last year and had zero problems with the rims. The hub is an all together different story. Marin ships their bikes out with crummy hubs that don’t often last long. So my suggestion to you, based on your given riding style, would just be to upgrade the hub to something higher engagement and more durable.
