Powder coating is the better option for a long lasting and custom looking finish.
Otherwise I would sand everything and degrease everything, these two are often skipped and will make a huge difference in how long the paint lasts and how it looks.
Start with a light mist coat, it’s to help the next layers stick, often called a tac coat, then two layers of normal spraying should be fine.

Life lesson: most products claiming to do multiple processes in one, usually don’t achieve either process well and/or don’t last. Prep the surface, etch primer, paint, clear. Good paint job is in the prep and the process, you can’t cheat it, unless you really don’t care much then go for it.
3 coats should do, one light coat, then two heavier coats. Keep the can if you want to touch up later. Again, you have to prep; scuff sand with 150/220 grit, thoroughly clean and degrease. Then spray away.

if you want just a cheap color change, spray is the way
3-4 coats with proper technique should be fine
but if you’re looking for a long lasting change, Powder or Ceracote
nothing beats a ceracote; it’s a little expensive running between $120-200 but you wont have to worry about damaging it easy since it’s basically a ceramic cured paint

Get a couple cans of “Steel-it” or “Alloy Armor” aerosals
Waaaaaaay more durable than regular spray paint, you can see cracks thru it, can weld right thru it, and like other spray paints touch it up when you do scratch it.
Both of those products come in various colors, but I really like the look of Steel It Grey. It goes on really cleanly every time.
Stuffs a little pricey, but on a BMX frame 1 can should do just fine. Id personally buy two so I can touch it up when needed.
