Build for the GF in advance of some bikepacking plans in the summer – given as a valentine’s day gift.

Specs:

-State All Road 2 UDH w suspension fork option, steel frameset, and 2 wheelsets (650b & 700c): $1,500

-Racing Ralph XC 27.5×2.25 mtb tires: $100

-Cane creek eesilk+ carbon seatpost: $250 (spare part laying around)

-Carbon 3d printed saddle from ali express: $80 (spare part laying around)

-SRAM Eagle GX AXS (bought seperately): $380 w charger and battery

-Redshift topshelf handlebar: $130 (spare part laying around)

-Redshift suspension stem: $150 (spare part laying around)

-SRAM Apex AXS shifters & Brakes: $360

-SRAM Eagle GX crankset w 32t chairing (not pictured): $115

-SRAM DUB bb: $30

-Two eagle 11-50t NX cassettes for both wheelsets: $160

-12spd eagle oilslick xx1 chain: $60

-Bar tape: $20

-Frame bag: Spare part laying around, but I think I paid $40

All-in cost (self-assembly, install, tubeless setup, brake bleeds, etc): $3,335 w a bunch of new spare parts going into the bin (Sensah 12spd full group, state road 2 crank, chainring, two 11-50t cassettes, state handlebars, etc).

New spend: $2,730 (due to using parts from my bin)

Probably should have bought the frameset and fork, then built up the wheels myself, but once I ordered the package from State, I realized that the groupset was lacking in quality and needed an upgrade to a more reliable, easy to use system. So I upgraded to an Eagle groupset on my own for roughly the cost it would be for a package from State.

A few things I didn’t add to the list: Chain waxing, drip wax lube, tubeless valves from bucklos, muc off rim tape, orange seal, titanium frame bolts, ti headset bolts, ti stem bolts, and oilslick spacers (don’t mind the long steerer tube, I haven’t cut it down until she figures out what height she wants the bars at) – adds like, idk, $100 to the cost. All self service.

In any case, fun little project to tailor this bike to her exact needs, ergos, etc – so the spend was worth it to me, for my income. Also she got me some amazing V day gifts in return, so the cost canceled out. Probably not worth it for many people – but something like the bare bones State Eagle AXS mullet 11-50t setup would be worth (only $999+$999= $1998, not bad!).

*Note: my spend to put that same Eagle group on the bike (but with better, in my opinion, cranks, chainring, and chain) was $380+$360+$80+$60+$130 = $1,010 vs. either $1,200 from state, standalone, or $999 as a bundle with the bike. So, not bad.*

I think the stock Sensah group on the state 4130, even though it comes with hybrid hydo brakes now, isn’t really amazing. I wouldn’t trust it on a long bikepacking excursion. Once I took it on a test ride, I inmediately went back to my shop to start brainstorming better options. Could have went cheaper, but the e-shifting with nice hydro brakes is something that really made her happy, so I’m pleased that choice worked out for her.

Is she running the saddle and handlebar at that height? It looks awfully upright, I would probably have a hard time hanging onto the hoods.

  3. Suspension plus suspension stem seems excessive. Making sure the forks are as smooth as possible would probably serve better
