2024 Marin Gestault 2.5 is advertized as fitting a 700×40 tire max; I knew I wanted some better gear ratios to climb, and found a great deal on the GRX cranks with a 46/30 compact. What they didn't tell me was the Tiagra derailleur wouldn't have enough throw to upshift without eating into my sidewall on that size. (You can see the scratch marks from the original mounting point.)
After going to several lbs's and an outdoors box store looking for a bigger cassette to run 1x (which nobody had ANY of the equipment I thought I'd need), someone took the time to check if a GRX front derailleur would work with a clamp-on braze adapter. A sister store 45 miles away had both pieces I needed.
Lo, and behold.
The derailleur is set as high as it can be on the adapter, which is mounted as low as I can to properly make the mech work; I swear, a paper-thin gap is my maximum clearance, and amazingly there is no tire or chain rub! Ready for an overnighter this weekend!

lol look out for single leafs on the trail
And what if there is mud?
That isn’t enough tire clearance mate. 😂👍
This is asking for trouble…
I’ve wrecked frames with more clearance and a little sandy mud.
That clamp is going to get worn down by whatever the tire picks up.
Do like, realize that bikes flex?
Good luck, I hope it works out for you, but I’ve seen people who do this wear holes in their frames from the tire/wheel/rear triangle flexing and the tire rubbing on the frame. I would be shocked if this doesn’t rub.
Ah yes, the classic “it fits by a hairs width so nothing could go wrong”
There’s a reason there’s still a gap after fitting to spec with the max tyre clearance: Mud, leaves, tyre deformations of any sort.
Think, and change the tyre to something smaller
Thanks for the laugh! Do i see a dork disc on there? no wonder! lolololol
