It was my first Bikepacking trip of my life. I did some thruhike for like 5 day at most before.
For my gear I took my hiking gear and went to japan with it buying on place what I was missing.
I buyed my bycicle second hand for like 400 buck and at the end sold it back to the same shop.
During my trip I was sleeping 2 or 3 night in my tent then 1 day in hostel or net cafe to charge my equipement. I always founded a place to put my tent, just one time a bear sniffed my tent but since I always leave my food far away it didn’t do anything else.
Japan is very good for this kind of trip, every time I miscalculated my water there was a vending machine on the road and the konbini (small shop) were always within a 10 kilometer radius. There is public bath almost everywhere and in all the town I visited there was a bycicle repair shop.

What route did you take?

I’d love to do something similar. How much would you estimate you spent per day?

I’ve cycled Japan and the highway tunnels are the bane of the cyclist. The older ones have very narrow pedestrian access and even the little micro cars sound like howling trucks inside them. But otherwise Japan is a cyclist’s paradise with conveniences everywhere. The Shimanami Kaido is a wonder, if you haven’t been there I highly recommend.
