  1. That was 1849 and the hand granade thing is dubious at best, but he definitely did make speeches and was a very outspoken public figure associating with revolutionaries such as Bakunin and writing open letters, which was the more damning part.

    The Italian comment is weird and seems to forget Verismo

  3. Wagner was also against French-Style Opera of Mayerbeer and Offenbach with ballet. Italian Opera examples with ballet include Verdi's Aida (with its Triumphal Scene in Act II) and Ponchielli's La Gioconda (with the Fantasia- favorite Dance of the Hours in the Third act).
