Can I be third time lucky cycling the South Downs Way in a day?

The 100 mile off road route goes from Winchester to Eastbourne and has roughly 3500m of elevation gain. The brutal route is generally suggested to be undertaken in 2 to 3 days. I try to attempt completing it in a day.

I am not the first one to attempt such a thing. There are faster people than me that have actually completed it. I am merely trying to complete it in a day after having attempted it twice already.

Will I finally succeed?

  1. Good effort – I can imagine trying to do it in one day on a mountain bike only adds to the challenge. I believe the FKT and most one day completions will be on gravel bikes since they're a bit more efficient and comfortable to ride over that kind of distance!

Keep up the good work, I'm sure you will achieve your goal if you stick at the training and find the right weather conditions!

  2. I did it last year in a day on hardtail with a mate, definitely better with a mate . Did it in July, moving time 10hrs39 , total time 13hrs36. Was a very tough day out , many many more climbs after you turned off , it's proper back loaded with nasty climbs . Enjoyed it so much that 5 weeks later we went back to do it the other way (Eastbourne to Winchester) , although I preferred the 1st way , finishing in Eastbourne is much nicer than finishing in Winchester. Would live to go again this year and try for a sub 10hr effort if my body and legs allow . Definitely need to train super hard for it though , 100miles doesn't seem much but add in the amount of climbing you do and the fact it's all rough surface and barely get any recovery down the hills either it's a massive day out. Pick a nice day later on the year when you get plenty of daylight and you'll get there , don't give up – the feeling you get when you come off the last descent into Eastbourne where the official finishing board is , is just amazing , I got goosebumps. Good luck
