  1. So i’m a moron and did not check my applied torque wrench spec whilst I changed fork bearings resulting in snapping the mainbolt of the fork of my Gravelbike (Isaac Hadron). Now I need to extrude the bolt, and need a new set of bolt ect.

Its a carbon fork, are these parts general or specific to the bike, cant see these parts on the manufacturers website.

As stated i’m a moron and don’t know what I can do best. any suggestions?

  2. You don’t want to damage your CF frame, so my recommendation:

Go to a bike shop who has more tools and experience than you and pay them to fix this.

  3. Slight tangent. But please also inspect that steerer tube before riding. If you’ve applied enough force to shear the bolt in your compression plug, it’s not out of the question you could have also damaged the steerer

By the looks of how crooked that star nut is I’m worried about your steer tube. Take this to a bike shop.

  5. There shouldn’t be anymore tension on the Plug, so you should just be able to pull everything out, buy a new compression plug/nut/ topcap assembly and install.
If you brought that to our shop we wouldn’t re use it due to safety reasons since the force applied broke the bolt.

  6. That bolt will need to be drilled out taking care not do damage the steerer. You’re going to destroy the expander in the process. Once enough of the bolt is out, and you have access to the expander, remove what’s left of it and then inspect the steerer, and hope you didn’t wreck it by cranking 20nm of force onto an expander plug.

There’s a very real possibility you will be buying a whole new fork, but you won’t know until that plug is out.

  7. *Solved*

Local shop had some time just now just before closing so went right away they had a Pro Gap Cap Expander set in the right size and checked over headset/headtube/fork and everything seems to be fine, no cracks or anything according to them. They instructed me how to mount the expender correctly and fitted for me just to be sure.

They did mention the bolt that snapped was really light and low quality aluminum but still, it was my fault as I was putting too much force on it anyway.

On the Bonus the fresh bearings I installed were still okay, according to them.

Thanks everyone, I’m not too bummed it happened as I learned a lot, just happy nothing worse happened.
