I have a 2012 Specialized Carve Comp (https://www.specialized.com/us/en/carve-comp-29/p/35078) with stock components.
I’m interested in purchasing a second set of wheel so I can use the stock wheels for commuting with slick tires, and a new second set for XC riding.
How do I go about determining wheel compatibility with my specific bike and components? This is new to me and my LBS are simply encouraging me to purchase a new bike altogether, rather than helping me in selecting a second set of wheels.

They’re suggesting something new because that bike has a bunch of dead standards and no one makes wheels for it. Look around for a used 29” or 700c wheelset with 100mm QR disc and 135mm QR disc hubs. If it’s QR, disc, and not 26”, it’ll probably fit.
You just need quick release hubs. 100 mm width for the front and 135 mm for the rear. That’s the entirety of it. Make sure they have disc mounts.
