Was given this ‘91 Trek 7000 for free and want to use it as a commuter/capable of handling our rough roads. Frame is in great shape, just some paint chips. I know I’d like larger tires, a different shifter, and maybe a riser bar? I’ve never done a build.
Please send me your ideas! This community is so fun to browse. 🙂

Wild idea, but ride it as is and figure out what you need to change. I bet most parts of it fit your needs already. If you want to make it look cool, that’s a different story, add whatever you want
Kinda looks like it’s in need of what the automotive guys call a ‘stage 0’, bring it back to full function and then decide what you’ll do from there. Functioning brakes and shifter are a good start.
I love those shifters. I’m actually looking for an old friction set now. They’re easier to dial in vs index which can be thrown off with cable stretch or slight turn of the limiting screws.
Agree with the others, first off get it running well, and then figure out what you want to change. You might find that you don’t like the way it fits but you may need to dial in the stem and bars for the right style and comfort. Make sure the brakes are doing what they are supposed to do.
If you want to make this thing pop, I’d start with finding the right tires, saddle, and grips.
As for the shifters, I prefer friction and would keep what you have.
Get some fenders / mudguards if you are in a rainy climate.
And have fun making it your own.
I know the advice you’re getting to just ride it is boring. I ignored the same advice with my first few builds and went with what just looked cool. Those bikes all got sold at a loss, they rode like shit and I hated them.
The next ones I rode first to see what they needed, or what I needed. Very bike since has been dialled in
