I’ve bought this new wheel set with HG freehub, and I need to mount a Shimano 105 12s cassette on it. It is compatible from the website (and my pseudo knowledge).

However the hub seems much shorter than on my previous wheelset, so short that I cannot engage the lock ring. There is no spacer at the root of the cassette, only in between the middle range gears, as usual.

I managed once to engage the lock ring by putting a lot of pressure on it. But mounting the wheel on the bike make the cassette touching the derailleur hanger. The entire system make the cassette pretty much 3 or 4 millimeters further to the wheel than it used to be.

I really struggle to see what I’m doing wrong here. Thank you very much for the help !

  1. So I’m wondering, is it a 10/11 speed freehub, but not 12s compatible, even though it was sold as is ?

I think it could be the 10/11 speed freehub and it is not compatible with 12s cassette. I’m pretty sure you can swap the freehub for 12s one, but first i would suggest to to contact dtswiss. They will tell you for sure if it is compatable or not and give you the part number for the one you would need if this one is non compatible

  3. Ya, you need the 11s road freehub. The 10/11s is for mountain 11, not road. It’ll read “11s road” on the freehub.

As others have said, it looks like you might have an HG35 freehub body, when you need an HG11 or 36.5mm body. You need a longer freehub.

Couple things, first, check to make sure you cassette is assembled correctly. I’m sure you’ve already done this, but just double check. I’ve made this mistake before and I’ve installed 100’s of cassettes.

Also, you should try this before you go buying a new freehub body. It should work fine, and will be cheaper than a new body. Basically, its a longer lock ring that will grab the threads on the freehub, despite the freehub being a bit short. This should work for you.

    12s cassetes require a 12s freehub

    10/11s requires a 10/11s freehub

Some 10 speed cassettes fit on a 9 speed freehub.

It’s quite a complicated world of standards to be honest, I would return the wheel and upgrade it to a 12s in your specific case. Buying a new freehub body is another option, if the manufacturer sells it.
