Just got my 2002 Gary Fisher up and running after my e-scooter went kaput. I am inexperienced with biking but I'm not half bad at it because I'm a cross country runner, I am actually getting places faster than my scooter lol. Overall I'm loving it and it's my new commuter/mountain bike. But I have some questions.

• when a bunch of cars are backed up in traffic, is it ok to pass alongside them if there isn't a bike lane? Do I need to pass on the right side of them/should I?
• how to pass other bikes properly when biking, should I just go for it and say on your left like I do for running?
• how should I test out how hard I can take turns and stuff? I have no idea the limits of my bike so I'd like to know a way/ideas to test or know if it's just practice based.
• and what the hell are those silver bars that say "profile design" for? I've heard a lot of different opinions on them 'they are for climbing hills' 'they are to put your hands on to be more aero on roads' 'they are to keep you from bumping into people while racing' like what? How do I use these things? What are they for?
Thanks so much for reading, I appreciate any advice!!

  1. I can’t speak as to the local etiquette of passing stopped vehicles, but those bar ends (in the 90s we called them bull bars, where I’m from) are to allow for more hand positions than the single position straight bars provide. Can be used for whatever purpose you like for the type of riding you do. Can tilt them up or down to how you like to give you the most useful hand positions for your ride style.
