How much power do you need to be a world class pro cyclist? What’s it really like to be a professional? What are the highs and lows? How much has equipment impacted racing over the last two decades, and is the sport getting faster and more dangerous?

Meet Robert Gesink, recently retired from the Jumbo-Visma team, the Dutchman enjoyed 18 years racing at the highest level and shared an insight into his experience being a pro as well how much the bikes have changed during that long career.

He also shared an insight into his immense power, during the Vuelta last year he managed 4 hours at 350 watts and 20 minutes at 436 watts. With his weight of around 70 watts that’s a 6.3 w/kg – truly world class. I started by asking him what is the best thing about being a pro cyclist.

  1. Robert is the best strava athlete ever 😀 Such good post and pictures, open data and some times answers comments. If you see this Robert, i hope you enjoy retirement.

  2. Love this interview… 18 years of pro tour racing… he’s seen the entire spectrum… his reflection with “two kids at home” lets you know he’s at peace with his decision… 🍻
