This is the Specialized Rockhpper which I bought new in 1995. Since then I have been using it sparingly and I have been the sole owner. I have done some maintenance but minimal during these years.
I know that this bike is old, but the truth is that it rolls like silk and I am very fond of it.
Since last year, I have been fond of cycling tourism and I have done short routes with this bike, less than 300 km. During the last year I have been improving and adapting it, thinking also about doing longer routes.
The improvements I have made to it, so far have been:
- Brooks B17 saddle
- New stem
- New handlebar
- Schwwlbe Marathon Mondial tires
- New cassette Shimano 7s 12/34T (originally it came equipped with a cassette 7s 11/28T and 3x chainrings 22/32/42T, the latter are kept)
I’m considering buying a new rear rack, as this one is that 950 g and it is not from a well-known brand. I am also considering buying some pedals, MKS Sylvan Gordito, but the original pedals work very well and weigh only 400 g. I do not know if these changes will be worth it.
I’ve done brake service, the shoes are up to date and I have also done the service of the two hubs (with new balls) and the pedals (new balls).
My question is if I should do some other service, maybe the bottom bracket and the steering, but this works well and gives me doubts to commit the disassembly of these elements.
Thanks for reading!
