My favourite bikepacking rig – an Orbea Katu – is mostly ready for its next adventure.
Work done recently:
* new bottom bracket (68mm x 113mm Shimano square taper) to take
* replacement crankset: off with the original 48T, on with a Shimano Acrea FC-M361, 42-32-22. 22 tooth chain ring has been removed
* Microshift triple FD, with adjustment locked down to work with the (now) 2x crankset
* Microshift Advent 9-speed 11-38 cassette, replacing the previous 12-36
* Microshift Advent super short RD, replacing the short cage SRAM X5 on it
* Microshift Advent 9-speed shifter
* Sunrace friction shifter for the FD, replacing an SRAM shifter
* Original wheels replaced with Alexrims DM-24s (from another minivelo in my stable), disk rotors removed. 24mm, rather than 19mm internal rim width of the original wheelset
* Brakes redone to take the wider rims.
To come:
* Maxxis DHF 20 x 2.4, to replace the Maxxis MaxxDaddy 20 x 2.0 tyres on it currently
* Custome frame bag
* water bottle and cargo cages
* Basket repairs to strenghten a couple of the welds
* Seat pack to replace the toolkit on it at the moment.
Took it out for its first run earlier today in this config. So much fun. Gearing at the low end is about 50% lower than the previous setup, with little lost at the top end. The 2 x 9 setup is so much more flexible,
I took the bike on challenging bikepacking trip a few months ago (should post about that too), and it performed so well. So well that I’ll be taking it on a much tougher and longer trip in about four weeks’ time – the southern end of the [Bicentennial National Trail](https://nationaltrail.com.au/) in Victoria, Australia – the Healesville to Omeo section.
