1980s 500 GP star Rob Andrews shares the remarkable tale of how he came to be selected to race the 125cc class for Great Britain at the 1985 Motocross des Nations.

In an extraordinary twist due to a political standoff between the factory teams and the UK racing federation, Andrews purchased his own bike from a classified ad in a newspaper, and raced that completely stock, secondhand bike to a top five finish in the world’s biggest motocross race.

  1. An almost unbelievable achievement Rob. You have every right to be very proud of that!! Also, pretty poor that Alec Wright didn't help you out with some spares. I can understand that he needed to be seen to stand with the other UK importers and so couldn't be seen to provide you with a bike, but surely he could have quietly provided you with the bits for at least a top end rebuild ahead of the event.

  2. What a brilliant story. Would love to spend a couple of hours sat on the sofa with those guys, bet they have so many more stories to tell about when Motocross, and the world was a better place..

  3. Only MXers can talk about that wonderfull stories. Surely not at that Level, but at the end it doesn't matter if it was at the MXON or at a Clubrace with your buddies…. It was just like a story from "Jody's Box" from Motocross Action Magazin. Everyone of us can told stories like that. 😂😂😂 Rob is definetly one of the great private heroes of that time and his videos and stories deserve it to make a big time Hollywood Movie out of it…
