  1. As a new cyclist from England 🇬🇧 it’s very disappointing to see the men’s teams shy away from much needed promotion of the sport. Other sports are all over social media with great content. It should be mandatory for teams to do more media work. Tadej Pogacar is practically unheard of but Lionel Messy and Christian Ronaldo are highly recognised to people who don’t like football. Cycling needs to step their game up for casuals

  2. What the fuck! Have to assume a TV rights owner withdrew access. It’s so obviously beneficial for the teams, the race itself and the entire sport.

I better Discovery plan to make their own version, or some similar bullshit.

  3. Omg it’s not rocket science, I liked it but it wouldn’t be making enough money. Lets look at Bridgerton- 32 million views first episode season 3 in more countries than you can count. I’m sure every cycling enthusiast watched it but they’re just not enough of them 😂😂.

  4. This sucks. The culture at pro level again is going to stay dismal in being paid. While other sports there are bench players that make 3x's more than even superstars like Tade/Jonas etc. We need shows/movies like Unchained to premote the culture so they can get more high profile sponsorships so cyclist can get paid the same.

  5. For Netflix, it's simple. the costs outweigh the profits. Paying out to ASO and production costs was probably too much.
ASO may also have tried to renegotiate every year.
They also said having a womens cycling show was possible, which has much lower rights costs.

  6. Aiming it at the french market was a big mistake.
Public television broadcasts and covers the race extensively and such a format was absolutely not needed.
Following french teams a bit more was a good idea to show the pressure of expectations placed on them but it should have been aimed at the US market first and foremost.

  7. It was boring AF. Has there ever been a cycling documentary, movie or show that wasn't borderline awful? Shows like Drive to Survive and others of the like are successful when they focus on the personalities, and their interactions and relationships behind the scenes, drama and such, cycling rarely has or shows this, 200 dudes in a peloton, mostly faceless, unrecognizable, and most times BORING. The last two years of this show were nicely filmed recaps of races with little drama or insight. What might work is a BTS recap after the season, where the real tea, dirty and bts stuff discussed and shown.

  8. French cycling at the world tour level is in the doldrums, and that was a factor in tepid response in france.
I really enjoyed the 2 seasons, shame about the cancellation.

  9. Il n’y a plus que les imbéciles pour croire en ce sport pourri jusqu’à la moelle. Tant mieux pour ce qui arrive. Le fric a tué le cyclisme dans les années 80. Le dopage est roi. C’est une vaste blague.

  10. Thank you for this informative podcast. It's too bad that Netflix may not continue the Unchained series. A number of my non-cycling friends (in the US) watched and enjoyed the series. I'd love to see a series, rather than one documentary, of the women's Tour. The storylines Ewan mentioned could be episodes, as well as ELB switching teams, the strength of Dutch cycling in women's road racing, Grande Dame Marianne Vos, up-and-coming young riders like Puck Pieterse, the popularity of Kasia Niewiadoma, and I'm sure others can think of other subjects worthy of exploration.

  11. There will be incriminating evidence of PEDS.
Just like the lance Armstrong documentary.
We are not allowed to see behind scene access of cycling. Hence no free cycling on TV. Everything must be controlled by the people who have money invested, so cycling secrets do not exit the paying organisation.

  12. A women's tour documentary sounds great. The overdramatization in Unchained making villains out of some riders was very off-putting. When you watch the actual TdF you get all the nuances of the race and the riders, it's a beautiful thing. Unchained felt hollow in comparison.

  13. Hopefully this will result in more authentic – vs manufactured – content from teams and brands. Some of the production decisions in Unchained were truly horrible – the interviews in particular.
Imho Mikaela Schiffrin’s Moving Right Along series on YouTube is more down to earth, authentic and compelling, with massively lower production costs.

  14. If you are talking to about cycling on TV… Eurosport moving to TNT Sports.. and ITV not broadcasting… Will this also have an impact.. As much as I love cycling I'm not paying the price TNT want. With a reduced viewers will teams struggle in getting sponsors? All these documentaries are good for the sport because of the media coverage.. Reducing the coverage… UCI and national cycling federations need to work with the teams to promote the sport more as a starting point (Personal view)

  15. It did have a bit of a false feeling to it and I don't think it did much to boost the sport. I think some teams make more entertaining short form documentary episodes, jumbo & use for example. I think YouTube do things better. Other sports do it better, the btcc had a good one

  16. I am an American who became interested in cycling because of TdF unchained s1. After following the sport for a year, I thought s2 sucked. They’re really bad at conveying how the race plays out with highlights/standings etc. They never got the balance right between targeting new fans and hardcore cycling fans who can remember the details of every stage 🤷‍♂️

  17. Ugh. The first season was fun cause it made it easier to explain cycling to folks who didn’t understand it. I couldn’t even watch the second season, it was like bad reality tv.
