Just got my first bike. Just curious if anybody knows anything about this old bike (original owner said it was from the 80s) and if there’s any obvious maintenance that needs to be done that one would do to any second hand bike. Thanks!

Make sure the tyres aren’t perished, same as the inner tubes. General bike service would be good if it’s not been looked after for a while.
Yeah, I think mid eighties. This was a pretty decent mid-level bike, I see what looks like an Ishiwata sticker, so presumably it has double-butted chromoly tubing, and what looks like Shimano 105 parts. Maruishi in my opinion is one of the better brands you can get a bargain on because they don’t have the brand recognition of Bridgestone, Trek, Miyata, but still were decent bikes. Apparently that company eventually became Jamis?
While you’re looking at the wheels, try holding the axle and spinning the wheels. They should feel totally smooth. Same for the bottom bracket and pedals. While the wheels are off, try the brakes for zero drag on the cables. Same for the derraileurs.
