I commute to work on bike. I work on a short road that is shared with a school so the road doubles as a school zone. Lots of students at this school commute by bike.

The speed limit is regularly 40mph and 15mph during school hours.
In the past year alone two bikers have been struck and killed (separately) on this road, an adult and a child.

This week a ghost bike has been erected in the child’s memory and her killer, who struck her while she was in a crosswalk with flashing lights because he was distracted on his phone and subsequently fled the scene and tried to get rid of evidence, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The child, who was only 13, was an organ donor and helped save 5 other lives with her donations. But this doesn’t change the fact that she should still be here, she should be 14 now and starting high school with a bright future ahead of her.
Rest easy, kiddo. Our local biking community will not forget you.
