You can cycle from Hackney in north east London to Bank in central London entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.

The route is 5.6km long (3.5 miles) and makes use of Cycleway 1 and the London Fields LTN.

  1. Think the reason it's still open one way near at the bottom of Wilson Street is the need to get large vehicles in and out of a construction site gate there.

There is (or was) a yellow diversion sign for cyclists pointing right to Finsbury Square, although seemed to be missing when you went down there. It did exist at some point though. I usually just skip that junction and take the cycle cut through into Finsbury Square at Christopher Street.

You would have been able to get to Ropemaker St and Moorfields comfortably by taking the cycle track on Finsbury Square, over to Chiswell Street, left into Finsbury Street, and a left, right into Moorfields. The cycle track green usually comes after the pedestrian phase goes red so it's an easy diversion, especially as right turns into Chiswell Street and Ropemaker Street from City Road are banned (not that it stops people doing it, but sitting in the middle of the junction waiting for a gap to get across is asking for trouble).

  2. I ignore the one way and cycle down the wrong way every time. It's been closed for at least 1 year now and won't be open for a while until the building is finished. It's not a big deal as long as you are cautious. They could close it to cars and just have bankspeople when trucks around

  3. Well done as always mate! And yea I do remember those shaky videos from back in the day – it was a little nauseating, but it's amazing how much your channel has improved – you are doing us all a massive service and I plug your channel to my cycling buddies every chance i get.

  4. Great route! Thanks for making this video. Its a really good alternative to Moorgate which can be quite overwhelming as a cyclist. I occasionally use Southwark Bridge travelling north-south and via Queen St-Gresham St this is a really nice way that bridge can now connect to C1 etc. cheers,M 🚴

  5. De Beauvoir/Dalston my manor and that route south and back I do often. A good extension would be to cross Southwark Bridge.
I note the warning about parked cars in Pitfield Street but at peak times the main issue is a high volume of cyclists!
As for the road surfaces there are other poor ones around there and I guess a trade-off with low traffic neighbourhoods is they move down the priority list for resurfacing – would be interesting to find out from Hackney if that's so.

  6. A route I’ve done many times (usually linking with C4 or C10 though). The Moorgate diversion is new to me though, I like the look of that and will definitely try next time. That cycle crossing on old street up to Pitfield st has been around for years in one form or another (though it’s better now than it used to be). I remember first cycling that section back in 2007 with the bottom section of Pitfield st. having a nice segregated contraflow cycle lane (as that section was one way back then)
