Great video! I ride through the winter as long as it's not too icy. Here in Berlin the winters are gloomy and much milder than a few years ago though, and there's a fair bit of rain. A good gortex jacket and pants are often a must, as is a helmet with a rainproof cover. Sturdy boots, mittens and a thin wool scarf are also a must for me on cooler days. And a good lighting system, a rear rack with a basket to carry a bag. A properly set-up commuter bike is then a thing of joy to ride, but you need a good lock, as bikes do tend to disappear relatively quickly if you're not careful. My clothier of choice: Decathlon. They have good cycling gear at an affordable price. Although not top notch, I've found the quality is good enough to last for a few years if looked after.

Thanks for the video, I am always surprised how Seoul can be that cold, while Tokyo is way warmer (although its almost the same latitude). I stubbornly always wear my German Army Trainers – and here I am, have just caught the flu. Greetings from Munich

There is only bad clothing, we say in Germany too. Conversely, that means there is no suitable clothing at all for cycling in the cold without certain restrictions. For me, that means freedom of movement. So that I can easily and quickly move back and forth or by side. because I do sometimes the stairs or jump up on the curbs. casualy making a shortcut through offroad terrain. For doing that, you have to be able to move quick and freely. It goes so far that even Terry B did a walk around in New York, on a day when it was simply too cold for him. He said himself that he didn't want to cycle with all those thick clothes on. Because the restricted movement.
Thanks for keeping my inspiration up until Monday, when I(hopefully) will be the owner of a Specialized AWOL and able to actually ride the sandy/gravelly streets of Stockholm.
On the subject of clothes, just yesterday I felt incredibly grateful to my knitting mum for providing me with jumpers and socks that would cost several hundred euros for anyone else. Can't get more locally sourced unless I start raising sheep, and I've got enough hobbies to be getting on with.

Nice bro. I wear a Kapital Ring Coat with the hood up when biking and it gets caught in my chain all the time but I look like a Ringwraith from Harry Potter commuting to work so it's worth it.

Winter riding here in South Florida is almost non-existent. That being said, my tolerance for cold is equally non-existent. When it is cold, however, my eyes sting from the cold and I often shed tears. I've thought of wearing goggles to reduce the wind hitting my eyes (potentially ski/motorbike goggles so they don't fog up, but I wouldnt want to compromise my visibility). Do you run into similar situations, and if so, do you have any recommendations?

…here in the San Francisco Bay Area these last couple of months (exclusively riding my Brompton) I’ve found that my Barbour Bedale has been my go-to, whether it’s early early morning (6am -43F) or late afternoon (4-5pm 56F) – either with a merino wool button up sweater or merino wool tee… DUER (from Canada) waterproof denim jeans, always wool socks (Chup from Japan) and RedWing moc oxfords (or New Balance 990s)…merino wool beanie or wool cycling cap…and cashmere-lined gloves… and my Thousand helmet ALWAYS…when it’s raining, I’ll whip out a Cleverhood rain poncho (which has been whipped out the last 6 afternoons😅)

Cool clothing choices. I also prefer normal clothes except for times when i mountain bike or if I am going to get horribly sweaty. It's compulsory for us to wear helmets so I use a cycling beanie in winter. But sleet requires waterproofs. The worst I've had to deal with before I emigrated was what we called black ice. It's clear ice. I won't ride on that as you can barely walk on it. Losing traction on your bike isn't fun. Luckily it was only a few days a year.

Genuinely though thanks for writing out all the clothes you mnetioned in the description, it was very painful trying to constantly pause the video to write down every item you said until i realized they were all in the description haha.
I love my Patagonia Capilene base layer, then a thick wool or cotton blend sweater, plus a high necked fleece on top if it's extra cold, and then my outdoor research shell or Patagonia micro puffer as my outer layer.
It's so wonderful realizing how to layer and being able to swap depending on how cold or wet the day is. Also good boots make a world of a difference! Would super suggest Redbacks, made in Australia and incredible quality!

Another brill vid. Just a quick note on fast fashion: occasionally you can find longer-lasting garments. True, the vast majority (98-99%) are likely to fall apart/degrade quickly, however I still have trousers I bought from Primark in 2004 (only mended once when I foolishly attempted to ride a short distance without tucking into my sock – you can guess the rest!) and more recently a pair of chinos.
The key is in the material and the stitching . The chinos for example are ridiculously over-stitched and the fabric is incredibly thick/tough (closer to good denim, actually). For the princely sum of £6 on sale. I have the feeling that, well-maintained (lots of top-tips on the interwebs!), they will last equally as long as slow fashion items.
Just keep a discerning eye out if you're ever dragged into such stores, real bargains to be had 😉 …

I'm guessing your hat is made by Heimat. Bought one in London and lost it, and couldn't remember the brand. Found the same hat in Berlin a year later.
How do you protect your eyes in the winter? The main reason I don't do winter riding is because the air cuts right through my eyes and makes them water non-stop.

The cold shocked me when I arrived in Korea a week or so ago. Glad there are signs we’re over the worst of it. Nervous of slipping on black ice when riding.
I recently, two years ago had a pair of red wing boots that I have had for about 10 years re-soled. Much like you I try to find things that will last a long time in clothing. I hope your boots last you the same way. Sometimes they are expensive but other times an item shocks you. I have a cheap old navy (cheap us store) button down shirt which I've had since my late teens and it's finally falling apart. Thanks for the great video.

Barmitts will save your hands in the coldest days, goretex gear, neck gaiter, toe covers/shoe covers, fenders and some grippy tires.
The weather is not bad everyday in the UK, I can remember at least a week of hot sunny days last year!

I love riding my bike with barefoot shoes. This year I even bought a pair of winter barefoot shoes and they are a game changer. It is a first time in my life that my feet are not cold during cold winters, thanks to extra space in the toe box, my the blood circulation is much better. Also greetings from Slovakia, I love your videos 🙂 and your bikes too! I would like to build one in a similar style. How did you get into this kind of styles of bikes? I would love to get some inspiration for my build 🙂
