  1. As a beater, sure. I certainly wouldn’t spend any big money to build it up.

That seatpost corrosion may already be a crack. You could try removing some paint to determine how far the crack has progressed. If it’s actually a crack, you could try drilling a hole at the end to stop it from continuing. Either way, check it frequently and don’t do any extreme riding

  2. I’m not an expert. Quite a bit of rust, but I’m finding it hard to tell if it’s superficial or worse.

What do the less-exposed areas look like?

  3. I don’t think it’s dead.

You can drill a hole at the end of the crack in the seat tube to stop that crack from propagating.

The rest of the rest looks pretty superficial.

    I would ride that frame.

  4. The large crack in the seatpost is concerning and need proper repair and ideally welding, the general rust is significant but not at critical levels, but you need to keep and eye on rust blooming. I don’t like the cracks in the paint, probably could be just a bad paintjob, but it may also hide cracks in the frame, especially since the seatpost is already cracked.

I would keep looking for another frame.

  5. You can find old name brand bikes $25-free in better condition. The homeless in my area are partial to old Gary Fisher mountain bikes.
