1994 KHS Montana Comp (16”)
Donor bike – 1994 Trek Singletrack
This is my latest project. Built up as a commuter to class / work. I’m trying to balance restoration with creative license, functionality and original parts*. The inspiration for the build came from a KHS posted to a forum many years ago. Purchased the frame off eBay from a fellow XBiker in NY. The original paint was that brushed gray Ti-esque look common to higher-spec’d bikes in that time period. While the original paint had some great patina and character, it was affirmed that surface rust underneath was going to cause issues down the road, so I elected to have it blasted and powdercoated.
I’ve purchased some vinyls for a Montana Comp from a previous year, which is where the creative license comes in.

Donor bike parts:
Full STX Groupset
No-sticker rims laced to no-sticker parallax hubs. Seated on Smoke/Dart combo 🤌🏼
Tektro Oryx cantilevers because they look great and perform admirably for $20 a set.
Uno seatpost bc 26.4, WTB saddle I had layin around.
Parts-Bin Bars / Onza ends.
Sakae Quill (120mm 90°) S/O BensCycles in Denver for the choice inventory, fair pricing, and quick shipping.
This is long winded but it’s my study break. I’ll post more updates once I get the decals and settle on a saddle.

I know it’s a different geo / model, but I just love the look of this one.
why’d you pick the Montana over the Singletrack?
That’s a tidy looking build.
