This episode takes us from just south of Donauworth to the Lechstausee (near Lechbruck), Days 8-10 of our ride.
We have finally joined the Via Claudia Augusta, the popular cycle route that follows an important Roman road that was completed in 47 AD during the reign of Claudius Augustus. The route officially begins in Donauworth, just south of town where there is a replica roman milestone marking the spot. However, we skip the beginning section as our campground takes us east of the route. However, early in the day we rejoin the official trail and begin to see the interpretive information signs that you encounter all along the way.

Scenery is pleasant and very agricultural, with lots of flat riding, through many villages on good paths and some quiet roads. We meet the Lech River and spend a lot of time alongside it.

We luck out with a few great campgrounds and the hot weather continues. The route takes us through the important Roman city of Augsburg and on to Landsberg, where we’re joined by our Canadian friend Nancy who’ll be riding with us for the next two weeks on her first ever bike tour.

By our final campground not far north of Fussen at Lechstausee, we are beginning to get great views of the mountains to the south.

Ride segments:
Day 8 DonauLech camping to Lech-Camping, north of Augsburg 40km
Day 9 North of Augsburg to Landsberg 68km
Day 10 Landsberg to Lechstausee (near Lechbruck) 57km

  1. You guys really enjoy riding your bike and germany. I'm happy that you had a good time here. Nice cake was a nice gift. Once on a bike tour I saw a young bike tourer (from ireland) with a flat and could help him out with a new tube. Other times I got help -all good things come back. There are a lot of nice people all around the world! All the best for you!

  2. Very well edited video, during the time you were cycling the Claudia Augusta cycle path, my wife and I were cycling the Loire valley and it’s chateaux, from St-Nazaire all the way into Switzerland , Basel. From Basel , we then followed the Rhine river all the way to Rotterdam where we finished our journey…. We are also from Canada, ( Montreal) and this trip was our 3dr cycle trip in Europe. Your cycling this Claudia Augusta path was inspiring as a possible next route… Thank you for sharing your adventure

  3. You have my great admiration for sleeping in a tent. The last time I slept in a tent was when I was 55 and I could hardly move in the morning, I was so broken.

  4. Daphne, do you know which bikeway Nancy used.from Munich to Landsberg….perhaps the Ammersee radweg? Just daydreaming here about how to work the best German/Austrian parts of the VCA into a future tour, as we someday hope to revisit the marvellous ride through Val Venosta. Thanks also for your mention of the waymarkedtails site….completely new to me despite many years of eurotouring.

  5. You are an excellent story teller. Your common sense approach to filming is also excellent. Thanks for taking us along. Looking forward to episode 4. ❤

  6. Excellent storytelling, editing and very informative too! Thank you. I am planning to do this route this summer, starting from Augsburg, but I am surprised how flat everything is. I was expecting some more elevation and climbing.
