I want a versatile wheelset for bikepacking but this is my nightmare when travelling on a train with my bike (not my pics). Carbon damaged by these metal hooks on bike racks on trains

Would warranty on carbon wheels cover damage for this sort of damage?

My options are for alloy – DT Swiss alloy GR1600 or for carbon – the Roval Terra C or Zipp 303s

  1. I can’t comment on the warranty question. But I can say, “do you really want to worry about your bike breaking from such a simple thing while out on a trip where it might be difficult to fix or replace parts?”

  2. It didn’t get damaged by hanging there. And if it did it was they had other issues to begin with. Carbon is strong and hanging them will not harm them.

If you are packing I wouldn’t recommend hanging them anyways. You’ll have bags and other stuff and it won’t likely be convenient to hang them up.

  3. Yikes. you could probably carry some pool noodle cut in half to place between rack and wheel. Probably want to look for bikepacking specific wheels…

Personally, I prefer aluminum to carbon, as a dent like this doesn’t usually automatically mean the end of a long tour.
