I have a SRAM DUB T47 85.5mm BB

According to the manual, I would need a 3mm spacer on the drive side. Is that correct, even if I install a 1x?
With this setup, I do have the impression that when I"m in the largest cog (36) on the back, the chain does run a lot less smooth than if I'm in a smaller cog. Could that indicate the 3mm spacer is incorrect?
