  1. I very rarely see an accident where one person is completely at fault. Almost every accident I see requires two (at least) errors of judgement. In this case the cyclist going through the give way, and the driver for not properly looking to their left. Remove either error and there is no collision.
Although beyond the two parties directly involved there are bigger errors being made.
Cycle lanes routinely are bumpy, have a lot of stop/starting, random turns around trees etc. Plus they don't properly separate cars or pedestrians (from cycles). This one is an accident waiting to happen which, and I'm not an engineer, I think could be helped simply by raising the road so the cycle can continue on the flat and helps draw attention to the lane for the driver who is slowing down for the bump anyway.
The half assed infrastructure in the UK is probably worse than no infrastructure at all – case in point two cyclists totally ignoring the lane (both of whom aren't the one being hit).

  2. Surely, even on a cycle lane, travelling in an opposite direction to the flow of traffic is absurd by 'the planners' anyway? The thing is though, even when new road layouts, new lights/lanes etc. are made, the traffic management is abysmal. I can literally drive through this new system and see the faults the layout will cause even from my first time use (and I'm just a 'normal' guy), so why can't these traffic planners?? Also, looking at that clip, the drivers' obvious main focus would be on giving way to vehicles from the right, the stupid thing is though that the cyclist failed to give way and was wrong BUT if it had been a pedestrian then the car would have been at fault. People. because of this stupid rule, aren't looking out for themselves anymore.

  3. Priory Lane. I have cycled along there many times, mostly using the cycle lane. That cyclist should have given way! If the Give way lines for the car were set back and the cycle lane crossed over without give way lines, then the priority would be to cyclist in the lane. Most people with sense knows this!

  4. One of the reasons I cycle on the road is because its clear that I and those around me follow the same rules. In cycle lanes its constant stop start, sometimes giving way, sometimes not. There's no consistency with cycle lanes.

  5. I used to be a driving instructor and used to tell pupils to always expect other road users to NOT do what they should be doing and to do what they shouldn't be doing.

In this particular case, looks like the cyclist hit the car. Now, I've stopped calling myself a 'cyclist', even though these days I do more miles on my bikes than I do in my cars. However, whilst on a bike, I would never go charging across a junction like this without looking and checking for cars emerging. This isn't Holland!

I have been hit twice square on by cars emerging from a junction as I have been cycling along the main road. A case of the drivers looking to their right for traffic, having not seen me in front of them.

Finally, I don't agree with many of the new HC changes.

  6. Agree with everything except the last bit where the driver pulled right out in front of Mikey where he should have given way. Maybe screaming expletives isnt the best approach but at the end of the someones just pulled out in front of him and nearly knocked him off because they werent looking or couldnt be bothered to wait. Looks like they stop and are about to give way and then pull out at the last second. Pretty scary and annoying when that happens

  7. I don't know why mikey would block u, tbf you've been very educational and I watch mikey for entertainment purposes 😂

Out of curiosity why is there a roundabout at a 3 way like that, but doesn't matter, the cyclist was in the wrong.

  8. Realistically if you are on a bike, for your own safety, I would assume other road users including pedestrians are more likely not to see you than seeing you.

  9. What an entitled twat "you hit me, I've got the right of way" when so obviously wrong!! Pillocks like that make it worse for all of us cyclists.

  10. Agreed, poor UK roads are the biggest problem, terribly idiotic planned cycle lanes (I have read that councils get Gov £££ per meter of cycle lane, an is the biggest reason for that?) lack of road markings, pot hooles, parking etc ec…
    BUT
If UK road users (& I include pedestrians, cyclists motorists in that) could act responsibly towards other road users.. wound'nt there be any need for cycle lanes???

  11. Mikey getting it completely wrong and having blocked the most neutral and level headed traffic analyst on YouTube is so on brand for him 😅

  12. Many of our cycle lanes are performative attempts to make it look like cycle facilities are available, but not the quality facilities available in countries where they know how to provide useful cycle facilities. Crap cycle lanes can have many more hazards than just using the roads. That's why so many cyclists are in the road, for their own convenience and safety. That said, if you use such a crap cycle lane – maybe you are just out for a gentle pootle rather than trying to get somewhere in a reasonable period of time – then you have to give way at the give way locations, or risk what happened here.

  13. What this comes down to is terrible law / guidelines / advice – who actually knows! It has given a minority of people the belief that they have the god-given right to go first because in any situation because they have a preferential 'vulnerable' status. The new highway code has become a zealot's charter – which was probably the plan.

  14. My flabbers are truly ghasted at the complexity of driving today. It seems that more and more burden is placed upon motorists every few year, with no clear communication about the expectations. To counter this, I drive ridiculously slow when the view becomes remotely noisey – traffic, signs or markings.

  15. Bravo. This is in Roehampton, and this road and the way cyclists operate on it is completely arrogant, uneducated, and dangerous. It's also worth noting that drivers like this one don't deserve to go through the emotionally destructive experience created by this irresponsible cyclist. And just a modicum of mutual respect and care would stop such instances from happening. Another unpopular view is that if this road was a 30, and the mini roundabout was a semi raised one, could make this road safer (there are no roads on one side of it), and that the cycle lane that few cyclists use is dangerous, especially as there are several driveways for large centres on that side. A 4 foot wider road might actually make cars and cycles coalesce in a safer way. Additionally, this whole area is rubbish for traffic, and basically this road ends up being used by a bulk of cyclists who feel they act however they like.
For context I used to commute 11 miles each way into central London, and I am a driver.

  16. Are we ignoring the huge roundabout sign? If not a first time user, it's totally plausible a ciclist would believe the give way is for people already in the roundabout (thinking the bike path is part of the roundabout, like an extra entry and exit).
The fault lies on no one, rather on bad road design (bad bikepath implementarion)

  17. "apportioning blame" comes from the top. the new rules "apportion blame" before anything happens. the self righteous happily jump straight onto the band wagon.

  18. Cycling really does attract the worst people. They are so angry and entitled all of the time. I cycle but i drive as defensively and empathetically as i do when in my van.

  19. Badly designed roads, riders who not only don't know the rules but also can't read a sign and the general congestion of a metropole have made me realize that riding in a large city is just not a viable solution to transportation. No matter how well the roads are built, no matter how much right of way you have, the combination of congestion and the inattention of all parties involved will eventually land you in hospital. If you're lucky, like I was, it'll be a mere broken shoulder and fractured fingers, but even that was a sufficient eye-opener for me.

  20. Puzzled as to why Mikey is wrong at the end of your video. He is on the Main street and the car is turning across from a side street. Clearly he has the right of way

  21. Who on earth designs these nonsensical layouts, we seem to be in the grip of a bunch of folk who just think "bung cycle lanes everywhere and who cares if there's room or reason for doing so".
Still, the markings make it clear – the car has a give way line before entering the roundabout, the cyclist has a give way line before entering the road. The fact that all this way giving (or "priority taking", as Ashley would call it) happens in a scrunched up couple of feet is stupid – but the cyclist is completely and totally 100% at fault.
And as you say, the entitlement is jaw dropping.

  22. Dumb road. Either have lights there or make single lane bike paths; one on each side. Cars look right before entering a roundabout, this is just an accident waiting to happen. And yes, it's the cyclist's fault, but come on some cyclists are literal children do we really expect them to know and follow a give way line?
