Lose chain. Need advice

Hello Reddit
My chain gets lose from the 6th to the 11th gear. I have a Shimano SLX 2×11 on a Felt fullsuspension. What can I do to fix this issue. I tried to adjust at the handlebars but then the chain just wants to jump up a gear but can’t quite, wich results in a bad sound and the energy doesn’t get transferred very well.
Thanks for your help!

  1. Check the dealer’s manual and make sure you chain is sized and routed correctly. From the pics, it looks like it may be passing on the wrong side of the derailment prevention plate between the two pulleys.

Also, what are the tooth counts of your min/max sprockets, and your two chainrings? You may be exceeding the capacity of that model. For a 2x setup, Shimano recommends 11-42 cassette max, with no more than 10 tooth difference between front chainrings.

  2. Your chain is too long. Chains come in a standard length and need to be cut to length. You can do this yourself with a chain too and an 11 speed chain pin or quick link or take it to a shop and it might cost $15 or so

  3. Your clutch is off…turn it on by turning the gray lever next to where the derailleur says ‘dynasys ii.’

  4. New chain looks too long or new crankset/cassette have different gearing. Wrap the chain from big cog to big cog, wrap through derailleur, and stretch the derailleur out with the chain so it’s as tight as it can be. Match it with the other end of the chain, add a couple links (2-4) and break the chain there. When you’re in your 1/10 gear, the derailleur should now hold the chain right. You can always add more chain at this point if your derailleur is looking a little tight but I wouldn’t remove more than a link or two at the risk of breaking your derailleur. If you still have slack chain your setup has incompatible gear ratios. Most chains will have a master link that you can undo with your hands.
