Hey everyone! I’m new here and currently brainstorming an idea for a new MTB helmet. I wanted to get some input from experienced riders like you.

Do you think a built-in light on a mountain bike helmet would be helpful? Would it improve visibility on trails or night rides, or do you think it’s unnecessary?

I’ve created a quick survey to gather feedback. If you’re interested in sharing your thoughts, it’d mean a lot! Click the link below to participate—it only takes a minute. Thanks in advance for your insights, and happy riding!

  1. Email?

    Nope..

For the rest, already checked the amount of heat a decent light with decent output for mountainbiking produces? Oh and the battery weight to sustain it for some time.

Helmet light, yes. Built in, no

If the light breaks, youre also down a helmet. If your helmet breaks, you’re also down a light.

Mounting lights to a normal helmet is the way

A built in light is a terrible idea. It will add weight to your head even when not in use, would be a pain to charge, and helmets are only good for 1 crash.

I wouldn’t want one built in. When you crash you buy a new helmet. It’s a waste of a light if that needs replacing too. Helmet lights should be fully transferable to another helmet.

  5. I use one all the time. But I use different genres depending on the riding so I wouldn’t want a built in one.

Plus trail lights generate a ton of heat.

  6. I feel like this is a student assignment. Good luck!

Your survey seems to suggest that you need to start by making the case for using lights at all. “Do you think having front helmet lights that illuminate the trail is useful?” There is already a ton of lights marketed toward bikers. Yes, we all want lights when riding at night.

Do I want a light integrated into my helmet? No, I want to be able to remove it. I don’t want to pay a premium for light-compatibility. I want to wear the helmet that I already know is comfortable, and I want to strap a light on it for winter riding after 4:30 pm. I wouldn’t mind my current helmets having some kind of universal adaptor.

My current setup is a very powerful light mounted on my handlebars, with a wire going to the large/heavy battery. Sometimes I put a much smaller light on my helmet as a backup.

As someone else pointed out, helmets are considered sort of disposable. You discard a helmet after anything that dents it. I wouldn’t want to throw out my light as well.
