  1. I’d get an inline adjuster and use that instead. Something like the Jagwire ones come with a short piece of housing too. Have that piece terminate in the cable stop and then cut the existing housing as required to route into the adjuster.

There shouldn’t be a spring in line with the outer cable housing on brakes. This is assembled incorrectly.

  3. If there’s a barrel adjuster at the lever then you should remove this assembly. There’s not a lot of fine tuning adjustment required on cantilever brakes. You should be able to get the cable tension very close to perfect without the use of a barrel adjuster at all, and they’re really forgiving if the cable tension isn’t perfect.

This is broken and looks like it was bodged together in the first place – there’s at least one extra spring in there, and the other one is useless.

If theres no barrel adjuster at the lever, or at the brake bridge (??), and you really need to replace this one, then there’s in-line barrel adjuster options. I’ve mostly seen them for shifter cables, but I’m sure they exist or will work for brakes as well. Just watch the diameter and make sure it’s correct for brakes.
