Anyone ever feel bad when you part out/steal parts off a bike in working order? I found a Santa Cruz Superlight on Facebook today that I bought just for the wheelset…
Chris King front hub w/ 32h Mavic 517 rim and butted spokes. Rear wheel is same rim but with an XTR-950 hub and XTR cassette.
Paid less for the whole bike than what I would have spent on those parts on eBay or similar. They will replace the stock Araya/Acera wheels on my Marin and should be a significant weight savings.

Don’t feel bad, you’re giving them a new life. Just remember to return the favor and donate those old parts you’re replacing
It’s an opportunity for someone else to get to experience putting a bike together exactly how they want
I have a Santa Cruz super light I would totally improve other bikes with its rims and crankset. Retro full suspension doesn’t have much use now, atleast retro hardtails can become fully rigid.
Of course! Why pay more for just one part when you can get a whole bunch of parts.
I’ve even bought a bike just to get the rear rack., but I live near a nonprofit bike coop and donate anything I don’t add to my parts bin.
Don’t worry about it, nobody wants things the same way as anyone else so chances are whomever else was gonna buy it was gonna swap parts too.
I scrapped a marin frame I couldn’t give away recently because I purchased it for the wheelset. I deal in mostly antique bikes and tend to buy bulk collections of projects/beaters so I don’t feel as guilty. The biggest issue in that world is ladies bikes are only worth what the parts that fit men’s bikes are worth.
I currently have a fairly nice original JC Higgins color flow. The springer and side skirts will likely end up on a men’s bike and the stepthru frame will be scrap. I just keep telling myself not to let the original owner see what happens to it.
i do sometimes feel bad for stripping a bike for parts but sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a complete bike with the parts you need than buying those parts alone
