The death of a woman cycling to work in Dublin has put an increased focus on the dangers facing cyclists on Irish roads.
Donna Fox (30) died in the East Wall area of Dublin when she was hit by a truck last week.
In the two weeks previous, two young boys also died after being hit by cars when they were cycling in Louth and Offaly.
Green Party member Ian Noel Smyth spoke to TheJournal.ie about the dangers of cycling in Dublin.

SURE IT'S THE ROADS FAULT, NEVER THE CYCLISTS FAULT. Cyclists may be helping to "save the planet" but their disregard to other road users, their arrogant sense of self-entitlement makes life hazardous on the roads for everyone else and themselves. They have absolutely NO cop on on the roads, no training in adequate road safety and seem to believe that road rules are optional for them. Isn't it time these parasites were made to hold licenses, take theory and practical tests as well as pay road tax and hold insurance? I personally believe over 75% + of accidents involving cyclists are caused by cyclists ignoring the safety protocols of the road, failing to signal and cycling three and four abreast on small secondary roads with utter disregard to other road users. Enough is enough, I am sick of them playing victims on the road when they're the cause of misery to those of us who PAY for our use of the roads. They really are annoying little bastards as far as I am concerned.
watch the cars cutting corners, they need retraining.
There is to much laws for the cyclists, it seems they can brake the lights and still moan at the cars,
On my recent trip to Waterford I visited the the greenway, I was there as a tourist and used the greenway which travels along the old Waterford to Cork train line as a means of transport to all scenic locations along the route by bike. It did occur to me though, that this could be the answer to most of our car/bike/pedestrian problems. If you ask somebody the quickest way from point A to point B, the description you give no matter what form of transport you are using is by road. If you lived in Dungarvan you can travel the full 46km distance to Waterford city on the greenway, only coming into contact with cars at a handful of junctions. The answer is to construct separate cycle-ways not along side traffic. There are two canals in Dublin city, why not use them, or abandoned train lines, or connecting routes through parks. Obviously you cannot keep cars and bikes apart on all routes but by prioritizing special routes for bikes separate to cars you minimize the exposure to risk.
The comparison I made was when I cycled 10 miles from home into the city centre I was never comfortable with how close the traffic was, and the speed disparity between me and traffic, and the buses and taxis pulling in forcing me to go out into traffic. When I passed Waterford institute of technology which is on the greenway I thought how much safer that 10 mile cycle would be if I was travelling on the greenway.
Green party are socialists. Socialist are Communist light. Might I suggest that the gentleman in the green party wishes to create Venezuela in Ireland.
Charge the pricks tax and insurance and then they have a right to complain. Light breaking dicks lol
I thought this was a piece on the lads from sherrifer knockin people of their bikes and robbin them…lol
Bottom line. Cities that there main form on transportation is cycling run 10 times more efficient than ones with cars. Were just stuck in that western mentality that we need cars in a city which for the most part is not true. MAKE DUBLIN LIKE AMSTERDAM
Cyclists and taxis are the scourge of the road..
For some reason every time time I stop at that junction my awareness goes nuts. It’s a really dangerous corner of Dublin
skill issue
You really need to come out to the Dublin 12 area and see what your party leader Eamon Ryan has done to the roundabout at the junction of Wellington Road/Templeville Road/Whitehall Road/Greentrees Road. It is a massive multi-vehicle accident waiting to happen. The cycle track around the roundabout goes so far to the left, that ANY AND ALL cyclists using it as indicated, looks to ALL OTHER ROAD USERS that the cyclist is taking the 1st exit, when in reality, they could be taking the 2nd, or, 3rd exit. Also the zebra crossings are basically, ontop of the roundabout exit point, that cars do not have sufficient time to get to the safe gear necessary to meanuveur around the roundabout. So, before you start your critical bull, stop putting lives at risk with your party politicals.
