Kids finally are on proper 20" mtb (5 and 6 year old) so I grabbed a cheap used hardtail last year (polygon premier 4) to bike to their school and we go out to appropriate trails for them to ride. They are loving it so much, she went and got a full squish electric (Java Air Scalata that ill never jump without much better dental coverage) while I'm still riding this basic hardtail. Finally, GT going under, she nabbed me a sensor comp for my birthday.

I, after a fair amount of wiskey and excitedly, threw on my pedals for a first ride the next morning while waxing the chain, swapping grips etc.. Hit a new trail next morning…. half in, i stripped out my not actually tightened pedal.
Hopefully I can run a tap and get by. I'd hate to have to hunt down new cranks.
I'm an idiot.

I’ll add that I’ve seen you guys’ bikes and realize this is a very entry level trail bike but… ya’ll just have way more budget than I do while raising 3 boys. This is the nicest bike I’ve ever had in my entire life.
For clarity – the JAVA is *her* bike. It’s small and too small for me. This GT is mine. If you are unfamiliar with thr JAVA Scalata – it’s a possibly sketch aliexpress carbon.
Try putting them on the inside just to rethread each pedal then remove and reattach normally again
Those Cranks are relatively cheap you may be able to find a drive side crank on eBay or a light used crankset for cheap
A tap from the front side might actually make things worse if you don’t grab the original starting point…
If you can find a tap that is appropriate (one side is a RH thread and the other LH thread, can’t remember off the top of my head, I would run it through the back side of the crank arm, where it looks like good threads still exist. OR if you can’t find a tap, use the pedal itself, or a cheap pedal that you don’t care about, and thread it through from the backside to “chase” the threads.
I’ve had to do the latter before and it works. When you reinstall the pedals, I’d put a little dab of blue threadlocker on the one and make sure it torque to the proper spec. Just don’t send it off any gnarly jumps!

I broke the same crank the same way my first time riding with it. Don’t feel bad, you might not have done anything wrong at all
Doesn’t matter how much your bike costs, if it makes fun. Maybe something like this works for you

So you can visibly see the material difference from the front to the back, IMO you won’t be able to tap that without using a heli coil. I’ve tried many times run the pedal from the back and rarely does it ever work. I’d just go and get a new DS crank and install it and spend time with the family instead of putting the time and effort into a time consuming job that may not work.
I’ve done it, lots of us have done it too.
Good news is… even if a tap can’t recut the thread right it can still be fixed with a helicoil.
