A Crossley Engine is seen driving a Climax Pump at the Twyford Waterworks Autumn Rally. Crossley Bros. of Manchester were among the first to manufacture the four-stroke Otto cycle gas engine in the UK. This engine, from 1895, is their standard single-cylinder engine of the period. It was designed to run on town (coal) gas, developing about 5 horsepower (3.7 kW). The engine came to Twyford in circa 1990 from a livery stables in Portsmouth. It is shown coupled to a Climax pump salvaged from a mansion at Broughton, Hampshire.
