While trying to loosen the steerer expansion tube in my 2019 Giant TCR SL0 I accidentally went too far and the bottom nuts fell into the fork, once I had fished them out I was surprised to see there were 2 nuts.
From what I can see online, the one with 2 cutouts is the one that comes with the expansion tube, but I can’t find any reference to the one with 4 cutouts! The closest thing I could find using google lens was a security nut on ebay (although that only had 3 cutouts.
Can anyone help shed some light on where this mystery bolt should go?

Intriguing.
Apart from the visual appearance, the conical nuts appear to be the same.
Was the bike new to you or pre-owned? I’m wondering if someone else dismantled the compression device & couldn’t retrieve the lower cone from the steerer?
