A friend has asked if I wanted to do some bike touring in the summer. I currently only have a Cannondale CAAD8 bike and a rigid MTB. I was interested in getting a steel frame touring bike. I've heard that the old Dawes Galaxy bikes are highly rated.

Opinions on this? I’m 6'4".

I suspect if I were to wait around, I could find a better deal, but I would also like to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

  1. I wouldn’t say they were highly rated they are just fine like most bikes. Lots were sold in the UK so they are readily available second hand in the UK.

What kind of trip are you going to go on? How hilly? What’s the surface? How far?

Low gears are imo the most important feature of a touring bike. They will save you when you’re riding every day and cranking all that weight up hills. Your rigid MTB probably has low enough gears to be suitable.

If you already have ultralight camping gear I would just strap it to your MTB.

  2. Seems decent. As the other commenter mentioned hill climbing gearing is important, I’d ask the seller about that. I’d also prefer to check it out in person rather than buy and get it shipped.
