This is the first section of our 28 day bike tour from Frankfurt to Venice via the Via Claudia Augusta in Aug-Sep 2024. We’re riding normal – not e-bikes! And we’re fully self-supported, carrying camping gear, although we also use some hotels.
In this episode Frank and I cover Day 1-4 after we fly into Frankfurt, reassemble our bikes and cycle from the airport. Our route follows the Main Radweg initially, joining the Tauber cycle path at Wertheim and reaching the small village of Tauberrettersheim in Bavaria. Our eventual goal is to reach the city of Donauworth where we will join the Via Claudia Augusta and follow that through the Alps and into Italy.
The Via Claudia Augusta cycle path runs along the ancient Roman road that leads from Germany through the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. The road took 60 years to build and was completed in 47 AD during the reign of Claudius Augustus. Initially the road was used for military purposes to facilitate supply, while in the following centuries it became an important commercial communication network.
Nowadays it’s a popular cycle route and one of the easiest ways to traverse the Alps, providing fabulous and varied scenery as well as some interesting history along the way.

You are back! Nice!š New helmet?
Happy to see you back. When are you cycling in France ? Germany has beautiful landscapes and villages. I ⤠your videos and your nice couple. Michèle from Champagne France.
Love your videos they have been very helpful in planning my bikepacking trips.
Another amazing adventure ! Thank you for sharing:-)
Loved your videos! Iām curious when you stayed in Wertham at the bike friendly hotel if that was something that you had pre planned or was it spur of the moment? I would love to do a trip like this but am always overwhelmed with trying to figure out all of the logistics and issues that we never go. And knowing that there are some hotels that provide facilities for bikes would be at least a start, knowing how you found them would be even more helpful! Thanks !
So happy to see you have a new trip to share with us!
Well doneš
We are looking forward to our trip in the summer. We will be renting e-bikes since my husband has had some knee damage and some other issues and feels more comfortable with a bit of support. But we are not ready to hang up the adventure packs just yet. Itās great to watch your videos – so informative, honest and inspirational for those of us with silvering hair. Thanks so much.
What a lovely surprise to see a new video from you pop up on my feed. Looking forward to following this journey and gain more inspiration for my own trip next year.
nice to see you back on youtube, Franz and Daphne.
Great to see you back with a new adventure and inspiration for some of us "not so young" cyclists šI'm thinking of a similar tour in September…looking forward to seeing more.
